1. Do I need a license or previous experience to hire a canal boat?
No license or experience needed! Full instruction is provided on the day of your holiday. Our team will give you a thorough handover and even help you through your first lock if needed.
2. How fast do canal boats go?
Canal boats cruise at a leisurely 3–4 mph — about walking speed. It’s all about relaxing and enjoying the journey, not racing to a destination.
3. How many people can sleep on a canal boat?
We have boats to suit groups of all sizes, from 2 to 8 berths. Each boat layout varies, with combinations of fixed beds, sofa beds, and bunk options.
4. What’s included with the hire?
Your holiday hire includes:
- Fully equipped kitchen (hob, oven, fridge)
- Bedding and towels
- Fresh water tank
- Safety equipment
- Fuel (some hire terms apply – see your agreement)
- Full boat handover and training
5. Is there electricity and hot water on board?
Yes! Boats are fitted with hot water, central heating, and lighting. Power comes from onboard batteries, charged by the engine, and many boats have inverters for limited 240V usage (e.g. for phone chargers, not hairdryers).
6. What do I need to bring?
Pack like you would for a self-catering cottage. Essentials include:
- Food and drink
- Non-slip shoes
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Toiletries
- Chargers
- Entertainment (books, games)
We recommend soft bags over suitcases due to limited storage.
7. Are pets allowed?
Yes! Many of our boats are pet-friendly, so your furry friend can enjoy the adventure too. Please let us know in advance if you’re bringing a dog.
8. What about toilets and showers?
All boats come with a private toilet and shower. The tanks will last several days before needing to be emptied — we’ll show you how or take care of this for you on longer hires.
9. Can we stop wherever we like?
You can moor almost anywhere along the towpath, as long as it’s safe and not restricted (e.g. near bridges or lock landings). There are also designated visitor moorings in towns and villages along your route.
10. What if the weather’s bad?
Canal boats are fully enclosed, insulated, and heated — so you’ll stay warm and dry inside. Rainy days can be very cosy onboard, and you can always stop early and enjoy a pub meal or board game!
11. How far can we travel in a day?
Most people cruise 4–6 hours per day, covering 10–15 miles depending on the number of locks. We’ll help you plan a realistic and enjoyable route for the length of your hire.
12. What if something goes wrong on the boat?
We offer full support during your holiday. If you experience any issues, simply call our helpline and we’ll assist you as quickly as possible.
13. Can children come on a canal boat holiday?
Absolutely! Canal holidays are great for families, and we provide life jackets for children. Just make sure little ones are supervised at all times when on deck or near water.
