🎒 What to Bring on a Canal Holiday Hire: Your Essential Packing Guide

28 July 2025

Planning your first canal holiday hire? You’re in for a truly unique break — a relaxing journey through the countryside at your own pace, with waterside pubs, wildlife, and picturesque villages along the way.

But packing for life aboard a narrowboat is a little different from your usual hotel stay. Whether you’re cruising for a weekend or a full week, this guide covers all the essentials you’ll need to make the most of your canal adventure.

✅ Essentials for a Comfortable Canal Holiday Hire

🛏️ Clothing & Footwear

  • Layers – UK canal weather can shift quickly. Pack t-shirts, jumpers, and a waterproof jacket.
  • Non-slip footwear – Trainers or deck shoes are ideal for safely walking on the boat or towpath.
  • Waterproofs – Just in case you’re out during a shower (which is part of the fun!).
  • Hat, sunglasses, gloves – For sun or chillier evenings on deck.

🔧 Practical Gear

  • Torch or headlamp – Especially useful for evening mooring or finding your way back from the pub!
  • Gloves – Great for handling ropes or going through locks.
  • Phone charger & power bank – Boats usually have sockets, but it’s always good to have backup power.

🍽️ Food & Kitchen Supplies

Most canal holiday hire boats come with a fully equipped kitchen (galley), so you can cook onboard — or mix it up with pub stops.

  • Groceries for the first day – Essentials like milk, bread, tea, and snacks.
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Cool bag – Handy for keeping drinks cool on deck or for picnics ashore.
  • Bin bags & food containers – Useful for leftovers and rubbish.

📍 Tip: Stock up before your trip. Some routes are remote, with limited shop access.

🎲 Entertainment & Downtime

Canal holidays are all about unwinding — no Wi-Fi needed!

  • Books or Kindle
  • Board games or cards
  • Download music or podcasts in advance
  • Binoculars for birdwatching
  • Fishing rod & licence if you plan to fish

🧼 Toiletries & Extras

  • Toilet roll – Some boats provide it, but it’s wise to bring a few rolls
  • Towels – Check with your hire company if they’re included
  • Eco-friendly shampoo/soap – Kind to canals and wildlife
  • Insect repellent & sun cream – Yes, you might need both in the same day!

🐾 If You’re Bringing a Dog

Many canal holiday hire boats are pet-friendly.

  • Dog bed or blanket
  • Towels for muddy paws
  • Lead & collar
  • Poo bags
  • Floating toy or ball
  • Life jacket (optional, but recommended for small dogs)

📋 Useful Documents

  • Booking confirmation
  • Canal map or guidebook (many boats include one, but it’s good to plan ahead)
  • Emergency contact details

🎯 Final Tips

  • Pack light — boat storage is compact.
  • Soft bags or duffels are better than suitcases.
  • Leave room for flexibility — part of the joy of a canal holiday hire is mooring wherever the mood takes you.

🚤 Ready to Set Sail?

With the right gear and a sense of adventure, your canal holiday hire will be smooth sailing. Whether you’re gliding through the Lancashire countryside or exploring waterside villages, you’ll be amazed how quickly life slows down and smiles pick up.

Pack well, plan light, and enjoy the journey. 🛶🌤️

Myself and my nanna had the best time on the canal boat, the food was absolutely delicious and we couldn’t have asked for a better day the weather was perfect. The gentleman doing the tour (didn’t catch his name sorry) was so knowledgeable and was very funny. He was really accommodating for my nanna as well as she isn’t the most steady on her feet, he helped her on and off the boat and helped her up and down the stairs which I can’t thank him enough for. Would highly recommend doing this tour and it’s in such a beautiful area. Will definitely be doing it again!

Experienced a wonderful autumn cruise along the canal here with Skipper Mark who shared all his amazing experiences and knowledge of the area and canal along the way. Highly recommend this if you’re in the area.

Our family of four hired a 6-berth boat and cruised from Burscough to Wigan and back. The boat was great, the route was lovely, and the service from Lancashire Canal Cruises was superb—special thanks to Marc, who was incredibly helpful. Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing experience!
As first-time canal boaters, we were a bit nervous, but Richard made the whole process easy and enjoyable. He spent a couple of hours with us on the water, guiding us through everything until we felt completely comfortable handling the boat, mooring, and using all the onboard features. We spent two nights aboard and had an absolutely brilliant time—cruising between pubs for meals, spotting a kingfisher, and taking in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. The boat was spotless and had everything we needed.
10/10 – highly recommend! Thanks again to Lancashire Canal Cruises!

Really Enjoyed today's canal ride. Was made to feel at ease when I was nervous on the water. Amazing views & a lovely Afternoon tea. Got to steer the boat and wear the captains hat 😁. And the guy even made time to rescue someone's Memorial bench after it had been blown into the water 💙

We chartered a private hire cruise for 3hrs for my Mums 80th birthday and it was just perfect. Our Skipper Tori was fantastic, she really played along with the kids and kept them involved. The weather was rubbish but we didn't let it ruin the experience, all having a go at steering the boat and helping with the swing bridge.
We took our own food, drink and decorations and nothing was any bother. Would definitely recommend this trip.
