🚤 What You Need to Know About Canal Boat Holidays

Your Complete Guide to a Relaxing Break on the Water

Whether you’re dreaming of lazy days drifting along peaceful waterways, or you’ve already booked your first trip, canal boat holidays offer a wonderfully unique way to explore the countryside. But if you’re new to life on the water, you probably have questions.

Here’s everything you need to know before setting off on your canal adventure.

1. 🧭 You Don’t Need Any Experience

Never driven a boat before? No problem! Most hire companies provide full tuition on your first day. You’ll learn how to steer, moor up, operate locks, and stay safe. It’s easier than it looks, and most people feel confident after just a short time at the helm.

2. 🚤 Canal Boats Travel Slowly — And That’s the Point

Narrowboats cruise at around 3–4mph (walking pace). The goal isn’t to get somewhere fast — it’s to relax, enjoy the journey, and soak up the scenery. You’ll have time to spot wildlife, wave to towpath walkers, and stop whenever something catches your eye.

3. 🛏️ Your Boat is Fully Equipped

Canal boats are like floating holiday cottages. They include:

  • Beds with bedding
  • Bathroom with toilet and shower
  • Kitchen (with fridge, hob, oven)
  • Heating and lighting
  • Seating and dining areas
  • Some even include Wi-Fi or TVs

4. 🔧 Locks Are Easy With a Bit of Practice

Locks might seem intimidating, but they’re a fun part of canal life. They help raise or lower your boat between different water levels. You’ll be shown how to operate them — and other boaters are often happy to lend a hand.

5. 🧳 What to Pack for a Canal Boat Holiday

Think practical and casual:

  • Non-slip shoes
  • Layers for changeable weather
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Torch or headlamp
  • Phone chargers
  • Food and drinks
  • Books, games, or entertainment for cosy evenings

Soft bags are best — storage space can be snug.

6. 🐾 Pets and Kids Are Welcome

Many canal boats are pet-friendly, and children love getting involved with steering, lock gates, and towpath exploring. Just make sure little ones and dogs are supervised near the water.

7. 🍻 Great Places to Stop Along the Way

One of the joys of canal holidays is mooring up by a waterside pub, pretty village, or nature spot. Plan your route in advance or cruise freely — you can usually stop anywhere safe along the towpath.

8. 📅 You Can Cruise for a Few Days or a Full Week

Short breaks (3–4 nights) are perfect for beginners, while a week or more gives you time to go further afield. Popular routes include scenic countryside stretches, lock flights, tunnels, and charming canal towns.

9. 💧 How Do Water, Toilets & Power Work?

Your boat will have a water tank for washing and cooking, a chemical or pump-out toilet, and batteries that charge as you cruise. You’ll be shown how everything works — and it quickly becomes second nature.

10. 🧘 It’s Slower, Simpler, and Deeply Relaxing

Canal boat holidays are all about slowing down, switching off, and embracing the pace of the water. It’s a peaceful, screen-free, stress-free experience — and the perfect way to recharge.

Final Thoughts

A canal boat holiday is an unforgettable mix of adventure, relaxation, and discovery. It’s a chance to explore the countryside from a totally new perspective — with your own floating home.

Thinking of booking your first canal boat holiday?
Start with a short break from somewhere like Burscough on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, and discover just how magical life on the water can be.

Myself and my nanna had the best time on the canal boat, the food was absolutely delicious and we couldn’t have asked for a better day the weather was perfect. The gentleman doing the tour (didn’t catch his name sorry) was so knowledgeable and was very funny. He was really accommodating for my nanna as well as she isn’t the most steady on her feet, he helped her on and off the boat and helped her up and down the stairs which I can’t thank him enough for. Would highly recommend doing this tour and it’s in such a beautiful area. Will definitely be doing it again!

Our family of four hired a 6-berth boat and cruised from Burscough to Wigan and back. The boat was great, the route was lovely, and the service from Lancashire Canal Cruises was superb—special thanks to Marc, who was incredibly helpful. Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing experience!
As first-time canal boaters, we were a bit nervous, but Richard made the whole process easy and enjoyable. He spent a couple of hours with us on the water, guiding us through everything until we felt completely comfortable handling the boat, mooring, and using all the onboard features. We spent two nights aboard and had an absolutely brilliant time—cruising between pubs for meals, spotting a kingfisher, and taking in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. The boat was spotless and had everything we needed.
10/10 – highly recommend! Thanks again to Lancashire Canal Cruises!

Really Enjoyed today's canal ride. Was made to feel at ease when I was nervous on the water. Amazing views & a lovely Afternoon tea. Got to steer the boat and wear the captains hat 😁. And the guy even made time to rescue someone's Memorial bench after it had been blown into the water 💙

We chartered a private hire cruise for 3hrs for my Mums 80th birthday and it was just perfect. Our Skipper Tori was fantastic, she really played along with the kids and kept them involved. The weather was rubbish but we didn't let it ruin the experience, all having a go at steering the boat and helping with the swing bridge.
We took our own food, drink and decorations and nothing was any bother. Would definitely recommend this trip.
