Are Canal Trips Safe for Dogs? Here’s What You Need to Know

Canal boat holidays are a fantastic way to slow down, explore nature, and spend quality time with your furry best friend. But if you’re wondering, “Are canal trips safe for dogs?”, the answer is: yes—with the right preparation and safety measures.

Whether you’re a first-time boater or a seasoned canal cruiser, here are the top boat safety tips for dogs to keep them happy, healthy, and safe on the water.

🐾 1. Know Your Dog’s Personality

Before setting sail, consider your dog’s temperament:

  • Is your dog calm or excitable?
  • Do they respond well to recall commands?
  • Are they comfortable in new environments?

Boating is peaceful, but curious or energetic dogs may need time to adjust to life on a moving vessel.

🦺 2. Use a Dog Life Jacket

Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, a dog-specific life jacket is essential. Canals have steep, slippery sides, and getting back on board can be difficult without help.

Look for:

  • A sturdy handle for easy lifting
  • Adjustable straps for comfort
  • Bright colours or reflective strips for visibility

✔️ Pro Tip: Let your dog wear the life jacket before your trip so they can get used to it.

⚓ 3. Supervise on Deck

Dogs should always be supervised while on deck, especially when the boat is in motion or near locks and bridges. Some dogs are tempted to jump off if they see ducks, other dogs, or new people.

Tips for safe deck time:

  • Use a non-slip mat or rug to give them grip
  • Keep them leashed if they’re likely to wander
  • Train them to stay inside while you’re mooring or navigating tight spots

🚪 4. Safe Boarding and Disembarking

Teach your dog to wait until you give the go-ahead before jumping on or off the boat. Slips and misjudged leaps can lead to injury or unexpected swims.

Consider using a portable dog ramp or lifting smaller breeds when getting on and off the boat.

💧 5. Keep Them Hydrated and Cool

Canals can be tranquil, but boats can heat up quickly in the sun. Make sure your dog has:

  • Fresh water available at all times
  • A shaded area to rest
  • Frequent walks and swim breaks (where safe and allowed)

🚶‍♂️ 6. Plan for Regular Walks and Toilet Breaks

One of the best things about canal trips is the frequent mooring spots along towpaths and countryside trails. Most dogs will appreciate:

  • Walks every few hours
  • Regular toilet breaks
  • The chance to stretch and explore

Be respectful of nature and clean up after your dog.

🍽️ 7. Pack Their Essentials

Don’t forget your dog’s holiday kit:

  • Food and treats
  • Bowls (collapsible ones are great for travel)
  • Dog bed or crate
  • Towels (you’ll likely need a few!)
  • First aid kit
  • Poo bags

🐕 So, Are Canal Trips Safe for Dogs?

**Yes, canal trips are generally safe for dogs—**as long as you take the proper precautions. With the calm waters, scenic towpaths, and dog-friendly atmosphere of most boating routes, a canal holiday can be just as enjoyable for your pup as it is for you.

By following these boat safety tips for dogs, you’ll ensure your canine companion stays safe, secure, and relaxed throughout the journey.

Ready to bring your dog on a canal adventure? With a little preparation and care, your dog will be a happy (and very photogenic) first mate on board.

Myself and my nanna had the best time on the canal boat, the food was absolutely delicious and we couldn’t have asked for a better day the weather was perfect. The gentleman doing the tour (didn’t catch his name sorry) was so knowledgeable and was very funny. He was really accommodating for my nanna as well as she isn’t the most steady on her feet, he helped her on and off the boat and helped her up and down the stairs which I can’t thank him enough for. Would highly recommend doing this tour and it’s in such a beautiful area. Will definitely be doing it again!

Experienced a wonderful autumn cruise along the canal here with Skipper Mark who shared all his amazing experiences and knowledge of the area and canal along the way. Highly recommend this if you’re in the area.

Our family of four hired a 6-berth boat and cruised from Burscough to Wigan and back. The boat was great, the route was lovely, and the service from Lancashire Canal Cruises was superb—special thanks to Marc, who was incredibly helpful. Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing experience!
As first-time canal boaters, we were a bit nervous, but Richard made the whole process easy and enjoyable. He spent a couple of hours with us on the water, guiding us through everything until we felt completely comfortable handling the boat, mooring, and using all the onboard features. We spent two nights aboard and had an absolutely brilliant time—cruising between pubs for meals, spotting a kingfisher, and taking in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. The boat was spotless and had everything we needed.
10/10 – highly recommend! Thanks again to Lancashire Canal Cruises!

Really Enjoyed today's canal ride. Was made to feel at ease when I was nervous on the water. Amazing views & a lovely Afternoon tea. Got to steer the boat and wear the captains hat 😁. And the guy even made time to rescue someone's Memorial bench after it had been blown into the water 💙

We chartered a private hire cruise for 3hrs for my Mums 80th birthday and it was just perfect. Our Skipper Tori was fantastic, she really played along with the kids and kept them involved. The weather was rubbish but we didn't let it ruin the experience, all having a go at steering the boat and helping with the swing bridge.
We took our own food, drink and decorations and nothing was any bother. Would definitely recommend this trip.
