Things to Do Around Burscough 🚶‍♀️🦆🍻

3 October 2025

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of West Lancashire

If you’re cruising the Leeds and Liverpool Canal or planning a countryside break, don’t miss the charming town of Burscough. Nestled between the bustling towns of Ormskirk and Southport, Burscough is packed with character, history, and hidden gems.

Whether you’re moored nearby or visiting by car, here are the top things to do around Burscough—from wildlife wonders to pub lunches and local treasures.

🦢 1. Explore Martin Mere Wetland Centre

Just a short walk or drive from Burscough, the WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is a must-visit for nature lovers. Home to thousands of birds, otters, flamingos, and even beavers, this wildlife haven is ideal for families, photographers, or anyone looking to unwind in nature.

🚶‍♂️ Tip: There’s a lovely walk from the canal if you’re moored nearby—ask locals for the scenic footpath!

🚲 2. Walk or Cycle the Towpath

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath through Burscough is perfect for a peaceful stroll or leisurely bike ride. You’ll pass colourful boats, wildlife, and open fields, with plenty of benches and mooring points to stop and enjoy the view.

🐾 Dog-friendly, flat, and accessible—ideal for all ages and abilities.

🍻 3. Visit a Canalside Pub

There’s no shortage of cosy pubs and canal-side spots around Burscough. Top picks include:

  • The Ship Inn – Rustic charm, hearty food, and great canal views.
  • The Hop Vine – A local favourite with craft ales, seasonal menus, and even its own brewery.
  • The Farmers Arms – Family-friendly, dog-friendly, and just a stone’s throw from the towpath.

Perfect for a post-walk pint or a relaxed lunch with a view.

🛍️ 4. Burscough Wharf

This redeveloped canal-side area is home to independent shops, eateries, and galleries. You’ll find everything from vintage finds to artisan coffee and local artwork.

🎶 Check for live music events or markets, especially in summer!

🌾 5. Discover Local Farm Shops

The surrounding countryside is full of working farms and local produce. Nearby farm shops like Windmill Animal Farm (also a great family day out) offer fresh produce, local cheeses, and handmade gifts.

🧀 Bring a cool bag—you’ll want to stock up!

🚂 6. Step Back in Time at the West Lancashire Railway

If you’re visiting with kids—or just love vintage trains—take a short trip to the West Lancashire Light Railway. Open on selected days, it offers charming steam train rides and a glimpse into the area’s industrial past.

🎣 7. Try a Spot of Fishing

If you’re a keen angler, Burscough’s stretch of canal is well-known for fishing. Get a day permit and enjoy a peaceful few hours by the water.

🎣 Common catches include bream, perch, and roach.

🌿 Final Thoughts: Small Town, Big Charm

Burscough might be small, but it’s full of character and charm. Whether you’re after a peaceful walk, a wildlife adventure, or a hearty pub lunch, you’ll find something to love here.

If you’re passing through on a canal boat holiday, take the time to stop and explore—you might be surprised by how much there is to see and do.

Myself and my nanna had the best time on the canal boat, the food was absolutely delicious and we couldn’t have asked for a better day the weather was perfect. The gentleman doing the tour (didn’t catch his name sorry) was so knowledgeable and was very funny. He was really accommodating for my nanna as well as she isn’t the most steady on her feet, he helped her on and off the boat and helped her up and down the stairs which I can’t thank him enough for. Would highly recommend doing this tour and it’s in such a beautiful area. Will definitely be doing it again!

Our family of four hired a 6-berth boat and cruised from Burscough to Wigan and back. The boat was great, the route was lovely, and the service from Lancashire Canal Cruises was superb—special thanks to Marc, who was incredibly helpful. Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing experience!
As first-time canal boaters, we were a bit nervous, but Richard made the whole process easy and enjoyable. He spent a couple of hours with us on the water, guiding us through everything until we felt completely comfortable handling the boat, mooring, and using all the onboard features. We spent two nights aboard and had an absolutely brilliant time—cruising between pubs for meals, spotting a kingfisher, and taking in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. The boat was spotless and had everything we needed.
10/10 – highly recommend! Thanks again to Lancashire Canal Cruises!

Really Enjoyed today's canal ride. Was made to feel at ease when I was nervous on the water. Amazing views & a lovely Afternoon tea. Got to steer the boat and wear the captains hat 😁. And the guy even made time to rescue someone's Memorial bench after it had been blown into the water 💙

We chartered a private hire cruise for 3hrs for my Mums 80th birthday and it was just perfect. Our Skipper Tori was fantastic, she really played along with the kids and kept them involved. The weather was rubbish but we didn't let it ruin the experience, all having a go at steering the boat and helping with the swing bridge.
We took our own food, drink and decorations and nothing was any bother. Would definitely recommend this trip.
