🚤 10 Must-Do Experiences When Visiting Liverpool by Boat

1 October 2025

Sail Into the Heart of Culture, Coastline, and Canal Life

Arriving in Liverpool by boat is a memorable experience — whether you’re navigating from the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, sailing up the Mersey, or mooring in the city’s iconic docks. With its rich maritime history, world-famous music legacy, and buzzing waterfront, Liverpool is a dream destination for boaters.

Here are 10 must-do experiences when visiting Liverpool by boat:

1. ⚓ Moor at Salthouse Dock

Start your Liverpool adventure by mooring up at Salthouse Dock, one of the city’s most sought-after locations for visiting boats. It’s central, secure, and surrounded by Liverpool’s vibrant waterfront culture.

Tip: Book ahead during the summer months or event weekends!

2. 🎸 Walk in The Beatles’ Footsteps

Liverpool is synonymous with The Beatles. Don’t miss:

  • The Beatles Story museum at Albert Dock
  • The Cavern Club on Mathew Street
  • Statues at Pier Head
  • A short trip to Penny Lane or Strawberry Field

Even casual fans will find something to love.

3. 🏛️ Explore the Royal Albert Dock

Step off the boat and into one of the UK’s most iconic dockside attractions.

4. 📸 See the Three Graces

The Three Graces — the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building — dominate the Pier Head skyline. These iconic waterfront landmarks are even more impressive when seen from the deck of your boat.

5. 🍻 Relax in a Dockside Pub

After a day’s cruise, unwind at one of Liverpool’s cosy pubs or waterside bars. Favourites include:

  • The Pump House — historic and right by the dock
  • The Baltic Fleet — a classic Victorian pub with real ales
  • Dockleaf — trendy rooftop vibes in the Baltic Triangle

6. 🚶 Take a Stroll Along the Waterfront

The Liverpool waterfront is perfect for a walk or cycle. Head south toward Otterspool or north toward the Titanic Hotel and Stanley Dock. You’ll pass historic warehouses, modern art installations, and stunning river views.

7. 🛍️ Shop at Liverpool ONE

A few minutes’ walk from the docks, Liverpool ONE offers over 150 shops, from big-name brands to independent boutiques. It’s a great place to stretch your legs and grab a coffee or souvenir.

8. 🛳️ Discover the City’s Maritime Past

Don’t miss the Merseyside Maritime Museum, where you can dive into Liverpool’s seafaring history — including exhibitions on the Titanic, transatlantic trade, and World War naval battles.

9. 🌅 Watch the Sunset Over the Mersey

One of the simplest and most beautiful experiences in Liverpool is watching the sun go down over the River Mersey. Whether from your boat, the Albert Dock, or the promenade, the view is always magical.

10. 🧭 Cruise Through Stanley Lock Flight

If you’re continuing inland via the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, your journey will take you up the Stanley Lock Flight — a dramatic set of four locks that lead you from the docks into the historic canal network. A must-do for any boater’s logbook!

Final Thoughts

Liverpool is one of the most exciting and welcoming cities to visit by boat. With a unique mix of maritime heritage, music legends, and modern culture, it’s a perfect blend of history and fun — all just a few steps from the towpath or mooring line.

11 of us had a wonderful cruise on Alfie Bhouy. Plentiful afternoon tea. Lots of interesting facts learned. And so much laughter as the "captain" and our 7 year old granddaughter shared jokes. Such a bonus to be given the opportunity to steer. Thank you for happy memories.

Always five stars from us for this lovely company! Another great trip; this time a Sunday Lunch cruise for a friend’s big birthday! Piping hot, top quality lunch and rose wine included. We added a bottle of very reasonable Merlot too. All while experiencing a lovely sail along the canal. Once again the very knowledgeable, interesting and capable Marc was our captain. Great experience - and always a great company to deal with. We will be back (yet again)!

SUPERB FRIENDLY EXPERIENCE

We were not disappointed the Service was 5 stars. Guests were interacted with and we were allowed to join in with activities. The host was all you could ask for. Ourselves and others had requests for some changes on the menu and theses were adhered to very well. I shall be booking for the whole family. Thank you for such a lovely day me and my friend both needed it.

A thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience. Mark (our skipper) was extremely knowledgeable of the area and canals, and also other canals. He was very interesting and hospitable to us. He invited our grandson to steer the boat and was very welcoming.
On a separate note, we were late arriving for the cruise and Mark did not rush us, and was very friendly.
Highly recommended!

Just had our first canal cruise with a Xmas dinner hot from the pub and I have to say the whole experience was brilliant. The captain was excellent and very knowledgeable throughout the trip and as a bonus I was able to drive with the captain which was a lovely touch. I would highly recommend this trip.

It helped that it was a beautiful sunny day. The skipper, Mark was very insightful giving us a talk on the local history of the canal as we made our way to Burscough Wharf and back again.
