🚤 What It’s Really Like Living on a Canal Boat for a Week

30 July 2025

Your Guide to a Truly Unique Boat Holiday Experience

Thinking about booking a boat holiday but not quite sure what to expect from life aboard a narrowboat? Spending a week on a canal boat is unlike any other getaway — it’s a slower, simpler, and surprisingly satisfying way to travel.

Whether you’re planning your first time afloat or just curious about canal life, here’s a real look at what it’s like to live on a canal boat for a week.

🕰️ Slow Travel at Its Finest

One of the best parts of a boat holiday is how life instantly slows down. You cruise at around 3–4 mph, which gives you time to really take in the countryside, spot wildlife, and enjoy every twist of the canal.

Each day unfolds with:

  • Morning coffees on the back deck
  • Peaceful cruising through locks and bridges
  • Mooring up for pub lunches or evening strolls
  • Falling asleep to the sound of water and wildlife

🚪 Small Space, Big Charm

Canal boats may be narrow, but they’re cleverly designed. Your floating home will typically include:

  • A kitchen (galley) with fridge, oven, and cooking gear
  • A cosy saloon area with seating and a table
  • A bathroom with shower and toilet
  • 1 or 2 bedrooms — often with a lovely waterside view

During your boat holiday, you’ll quickly adjust to the compact space and learn how to live simply — and happily — with less.

💧 Living Off-Grid (In a Good Way)

Life on board makes you more aware of everyday things:

  • Water tanks need topping up every couple of days
  • Toilet waste is stored in a holding tank (emptied at marinas)
  • Electricity is limited — but enough for lights, phone charging & more
  • Heating varies by boat — often diesel or solid fuel

Far from being inconvenient, it’s a refreshing change. You’ll enjoy feeling more connected to your surroundings.

🚤 Learning to Cruise

Don’t worry — you don’t need any experience to enjoy a boat holiday. Your hire company will show you how to:

  • Steer using the tiller
  • Operate locks and swing bridges
  • Moor up safely
  • Manage your boat confidently

Steering takes a little practice, but it’s part of the fun — and other boaters are always happy to help.

🦆 Wildlife, Waterways & Wanderlust

A week on a canal boat gives you front-row seats to nature:

  • Herons, swans, ducks, kingfishers
  • Rolling fields, canalside cottages, and peaceful villages
  • Quiet footpaths perfect for stretching your legs

There’s a unique rhythm to life on the water that you simply don’t get with a hotel or cottage stay.

🍴 Food, Pubs & Deck Dining

You can cook onboard using your galley kitchen, or plan your route around canalside pubs and local farm shops.

  • Enjoy breakfasts on deck
  • Stop at pubs with moorings for lunch or dinner
  • Treat yourself to a picnic by the towpath

Food just tastes better when you’ve earned it after a day’s cruising and fresh air.

💬 Final Thoughts

A week living on a canal boat is the perfect escape from busy schedules and fast-paced living. It’s peaceful, practical, and endlessly scenic — and a fantastic choice for couples, families, or anyone craving a slower pace.

If you’re considering a boat holiday, go for it. You’ll not only learn how to handle a canal boat, but you’ll also discover a new way of seeing the world — one peaceful stretch at a time.

Myself and my nanna had the best time on the canal boat, the food was absolutely delicious and we couldn’t have asked for a better day the weather was perfect. The gentleman doing the tour (didn’t catch his name sorry) was so knowledgeable and was very funny. He was really accommodating for my nanna as well as she isn’t the most steady on her feet, he helped her on and off the boat and helped her up and down the stairs which I can’t thank him enough for. Would highly recommend doing this tour and it’s in such a beautiful area. Will definitely be doing it again!

Our family of four hired a 6-berth boat and cruised from Burscough to Wigan and back. The boat was great, the route was lovely, and the service from Lancashire Canal Cruises was superb—special thanks to Marc, who was incredibly helpful. Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing experience!
As first-time canal boaters, we were a bit nervous, but Richard made the whole process easy and enjoyable. He spent a couple of hours with us on the water, guiding us through everything until we felt completely comfortable handling the boat, mooring, and using all the onboard features. We spent two nights aboard and had an absolutely brilliant time—cruising between pubs for meals, spotting a kingfisher, and taking in the beautiful Lancashire countryside. The boat was spotless and had everything we needed.
10/10 – highly recommend! Thanks again to Lancashire Canal Cruises!

Really Enjoyed today's canal ride. Was made to feel at ease when I was nervous on the water. Amazing views & a lovely Afternoon tea. Got to steer the boat and wear the captains hat 😁. And the guy even made time to rescue someone's Memorial bench after it had been blown into the water 💙

We chartered a private hire cruise for 3hrs for my Mums 80th birthday and it was just perfect. Our Skipper Tori was fantastic, she really played along with the kids and kept them involved. The weather was rubbish but we didn't let it ruin the experience, all having a go at steering the boat and helping with the swing bridge.
We took our own food, drink and decorations and nothing was any bother. Would definitely recommend this trip.
