🚤 10 Irresistible Reasons to Choose a Canal Boat Holiday

Why Life at 4mph Might Just Be Your Perfect Getaway

Looking for a break that’s peaceful, picturesque, and a little out of the ordinary? A canal boat holiday could be just what you need. Whether you’re after slow travel, a family-friendly escape, or something a little different, cruising the UK’s waterways offers charm you just can’t get on a plane or train.

Here are 10 irresistible reasons to book a canal boat holiday:

1. 🧘‍♀️ Total Relaxation at a Slower Pace

Cruising at 3–4 mph forces you to switch off, unwind, and enjoy the moment. There’s no rush — just the gentle chug of the engine and the world slowly gliding by.

2. 🌳 Ever-Changing Scenery

Wake up in the countryside, cruise through a historic town by lunchtime, and moor beside a pub by evening. You’ll see wildlife, wildflowers, bridges, tunnels, and locks — every day feels new.

3. 🛶 No Experience Needed

Never driven a boat before? No problem. Boat hire companies give you full training before you set off. Most newcomers feel confident within an hour or two.

4. 🐾 It’s Dog Friendly

Bring your four-legged friend! Most canal hire boats are pet-friendly, and the towpaths make perfect walkies.

5. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Ideal for Families, Couples & Groups

Whether it’s a romantic escape, a family holiday, or a trip with friends, there’s a boat and route to suit. It’s a fun, shared adventure that brings people together.

6. 🍻 Moor Outside a Pub (Yes, Really!)

There’s nothing quite like mooring up outside a canalside pub after a day’s cruising. Many traditional inns have moorings right outside — dinner is just a few steps away.

7. 🕰️ Full of Heritage and History

From Victorian locks to industrial bridges and aqueducts, canal holidays are a journey through Britain’s past. You’ll cruise through centuries-old engineering marvels.

8. 💸 Great Value for a Unique Experience

With self-catering options, no airport fees, and activities built into the journey, canal boat holidays can offer fantastic value — especially for longer breaks or groups.

9. 🌦️ It’s a Great All-Weather Holiday

Rain or shine, you’ll be dry and cosy in your floating holiday home. Boats come with heating, kitchens, and comfy beds — perfect for year-round exploring.

10. ❤️ A Unique, Unforgettable Adventure

Every trip is different. From chatting to other boaters to spotting kingfishers or working your first lock, a canal holiday creates memories you’ll talk about for years.

🚤 Ready to Set Sail?

Whether you’re cruising from Burscough to Liverpool or exploring the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, there’s a canal boat holiday waiting for you. It’s time to trade traffic for towpaths — and experience the magic of life on the water.

11 of us had a wonderful cruise on Alfie Bhouy. Plentiful afternoon tea. Lots of interesting facts learned. And so much laughter as the "captain" and our 7 year old granddaughter shared jokes. Such a bonus to be given the opportunity to steer. Thank you for happy memories.

Always five stars from us for this lovely company! Another great trip; this time a Sunday Lunch cruise for a friend’s big birthday! Piping hot, top quality lunch and rose wine included. We added a bottle of very reasonable Merlot too. All while experiencing a lovely sail along the canal. Once again the very knowledgeable, interesting and capable Marc was our captain. Great experience - and always a great company to deal with. We will be back (yet again)!

SUPERB FRIENDLY EXPERIENCE

We were not disappointed the Service was 5 stars. Guests were interacted with and we were allowed to join in with activities. The host was all you could ask for. Ourselves and others had requests for some changes on the menu and theses were adhered to very well. I shall be booking for the whole family. Thank you for such a lovely day me and my friend both needed it.

A thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience. Mark (our skipper) was extremely knowledgeable of the area and canals, and also other canals. He was very interesting and hospitable to us. He invited our grandson to steer the boat and was very welcoming.
On a separate note, we were late arriving for the cruise and Mark did not rush us, and was very friendly.
Highly recommended!

Just had our first canal cruise with a Xmas dinner hot from the pub and I have to say the whole experience was brilliant. The captain was excellent and very knowledgeable throughout the trip and as a bonus I was able to drive with the captain which was a lovely touch. I would highly recommend this trip.

It helped that it was a beautiful sunny day. The skipper, Mark was very insightful giving us a talk on the local history of the canal as we made our way to Burscough Wharf and back again.
